When Clutter Blocks Clarity

Mental clutter is real and its keeps you from thinking clearly.

This time of year, always reminds me how much better I feel when I clear things out – physically and mentally.

I used to tell myself that I did not have time to go through that pile of papers or clean out the junk drawer. But honestly? Sometimes I don’t have time to.

When my desk is a mess, my thoughts usually are also.  And when things pile up – on the floor or in my head – it’s hard to focus, make decisions or even think clearly.

If you have ever felt mentally stuck, overwhelmed, or like your thoughts are bouncing around like a pinball machine…you are not alone.

Here’s what been helping me lately:

  • 15 minutes a day to sort a drawer or stack of papers or items

  • File it, take action, or let it go

  • The 7 second rule – if I can put it away quickly, I do it

  • Hydrate, stretch, and take a breath when things feel too heavy

And maybe most importantly – I have been asking myself that question.

“Do I really need all this stuff?”

The older I get, the more I am convinced…simple is better!

Your Turn……

  1. What is one thing mental or physical that you are ready to clear out?

  2. Give your brain a break - take a 5-minute walk outside or around your space, stand, stretch and hydrate.

  3. Ask yourself does it have a home? If not, create one. If it doesn't need to be in your space or your mind, let it go.
