Can’t Decide What to Let Go? Try the “I Don’t Know Box” Method

One of the biggest reasons people struggle to declutter is because they don’t know what to let go of. As a Professional Organizer, I’ve learned that not every decision has to be made on the spot. In fact, one of my favorite organizing tools is something I call the “I Don’t Know Box.” 

Here’s how it works! 

Whenever I come across an item I’m unsure about, I place it in a designated box instead of forcing an immediate decision. I label the box with the date and place it somewhere out of the way. 

Then I simply live my life :) 

If months go by and I never think about the items or feel the need to open the box, that’s usually a clear sign they’re no longer serving a purpose in my daily life. At that point, it becomes much easier to donate or discard them because I’ve already proven I can live without them. 

Of course, there are exceptions. Important documents, sentimental keepsakes, and seasonal items shouldn’t be handled with this method. But for those “maybe” items, it can be incredibly freeing. 

The best part is that this method takes the pressure off. You don’t have to make every decision immediately, and you don’t have to worry about regretting letting something go. You’re simply giving yourself time to gain clarity and confidence. 

Decluttering isn’t about getting rid of everything. It’s about creating a home filled with things that support your life today. Sometimes all you need is permission to say, “I’m not sure yet,” and that’s okay. 

If you’ve been putting off decluttering because every item feels like a difficult decision, give the “I Don’t Know” Box a try. Not every item should go straight into it, but it can give you the space you need when you feel stuck.
