Why I Stay Organized

September always feels like a fresh start. We have new school
supplies, backpacks are back by the door, calendars are filling up,
football has begun, and routines are starting to form. With two
teenagers and a pre-teen, our family is entering another busy season,
but it's a busy season we've chosen. We love being involved and
cheering our kids on from the sidelines.

As a professional organizer, people sometimes assume I stay organized
because I love having a perfectly tidy house. I don't! I appreciate a
clean, organized home just like anyone else, but that's not my
motivation. I stay organized because it helps me stay sane during busy
seasons. Having systems in place doesn't keep the house from getting
messy, it just makes it much easier to reset when it does.

One thing that is important to me is eating dinner at home as often as
we can. Our meals aren't elaborate; we don't serve gourmet meals. Most
evenings it's something simple: tacos, grilled chicken, hamburgers,
etc. We try to make the most of the evenings we're all home. So when
my pantry is organized, I know what we have. When the freezer isn't
jam-packed with food, I actually use what's in it. When the kitchen
isn't buried in clutter, making dinner feels doable, even on a game
night when we're rushing out the door.

The same idea shows up in other parts of our home, too. When everyone
knows where to find what they need, mornings run more smoothly. When
paperwork has a home, I don't waste time searching for forms or
schedules. When we come home after a long day, it's easier to relax
because we're not greeted by a dozen little decisions waiting to be
made.

Organization doesn't save hours every day. Sometimes it only saves
five or ten minutes, but those minutes add up. They're the difference
between feeling frazzled and feeling prepared. They're the difference
between ordering food because I can't find what I need and putting
together a simple meal with what we already have.

I don't organize because I want every drawer to look like a Pinterest
photo. I organize because I want my home to support our life instead
of slowing it down. The same is true for my clients. Whether we're
organizing a pantry, a closet, or creating systems throughout a home,
the goal isn't perfection. It's creating spaces that make everyday
life a little easier.

Life will always have busy seasons. I know I can't out-organize the
chaos, but I can reduce it. That's why I stay organized!
