Turning 50: Surprises, Adventures, and Saying Yes to What’s Next
This year, I turned 50.
Even typing that feels surreal.
Fifty feels different than 30. Different than 40. It feels less about proving something, and more about choosing something. Choosing how I want to live, what I want to prioritize, and what I’m brave enough to say yes to next.
And apparently, it also feels like getting completely surprised by your kids.
The Surprise I Didn’t See Coming
My kids threw me a surprise birthday party this year - and they got me good.
I like to believe I am not easily surprised. I ask questions. I sense when something feels “off.” And somehow, they pulled it off flawlessly.
Walking into that room and seeing friends, family, and the people I love most gathered together was one of those moments that makes you pause. You realize the life you’ve built. The relationships that matter. The years that have passed - not in a sad way, but in a grateful one.
It reminded me that while we spend so much time organizing homes and helping others create intentional spaces, what really matters are the people filling those spaces.
That night felt full in the best possible way.
Celebrating 50 in Italy
As if that wasn’t enough, I also celebrated this milestone by traveling to Italy with my boyfriend.
Italy has a way of slowing you down. Long dinners. Walks through historic streets. Art, architecture, and that feeling of standing somewhere that has held centuries of stories.
There’s something about celebrating 50 in a place like that that feels poetic. You realize you are still becoming. Still evolving. Still capable of new experiences and deep joy.
It wasn’t just a trip, it felt like a marker. A celebration of this chapter, not the closing of one.
First-Time Adventures (Yes, Even at 50)
This year also brought another first: I visited a psychic for the first time.
Now, whether you’re fully on board with that kind of thing or a little skeptical (I see you), it was such an interesting experience.
It wasn’t about predicting the future. It was more about reflection. About listening differently. About being open to possibility.
At 50, I find myself less concerned with whether something sounds practical and more curious about whether it feels expansive.
What stretches me?
What opens me up?
What makes me lean in instead of play it safe?
Apparently, sometimes that includes a psychic.
And Yes… I Still Want to Skydive
Here’s the thing.
Turning 50 did not make me want to slow down.
If anything, it made me more aware of time, not in a fearful way, but in a clarifying way. There are still things on my list.
One of them? Skydiving.
I haven’t done it yet. But I want to.
Because 50 isn’t about shrinking. It’s not about quietly settling into comfort. For me, it’s about courage. About staying curious. About doing the things that scare you just enough to remind you that you’re alive.
What This Has to Do With Organizing
You might be wondering how this ties into professional organizing.
Here’s what I’ve realized: organizing isn’t just about containers and systems. It’s about creating space, physically and mentally, for the life you want to live.
At 50, I feel clearer about what matters and what doesn’t. I want less excess and more meaning. Less obligation and more intention. Less clutter, in my home and in my calendar, and more room for experiences, connection, and joy.
That clarity is something I see in so many clients during big transitions. Milestones have a way of sharpening your focus.
You start asking:
What do I actually want in this next chapter?
What am I holding onto that no longer serves me?
What am I making room for?
For me, this year has been about making room - for surprise, for travel, for new experiences, for bravery.
And maybe for skydiving.
Fifty feels like standing at the edge of something wide open.
And I’m ready to jump!
