Why I Became a Professional Organizer and Why It Matters

Growing up as an Iowa farmgirl, I never would have imagined that my love for organization could be a career someday. With a passion for design and helping others, I pursued a degree at Iowa State University and worked as a mom, a graphic designer, and a teacher associate for many years before deciding to make a shift to professional organizer. I was ready to help serve others in a new way that brings joy to both my clients and me.

Organizing always came easy to me, but when I became a mother I learned it’s not something that comes naturally for everyone. Having four kids, all having different personalities and interests, I had to learn what organizational strategies worked best for each of them and for us as a family. Parenting a child with ADHD, I have learned that her needs and methods are very different from mine. Still good, just different from mine and it took some time to figure these things out. We both need systems that are easy for us to understand and follow. As a mom, I like to have a lot of tools and supplies ready for whatever the day brings. My daughter needs the bare minimum to work at her optimum level. Extra things create overwhelm for her. Out of sight items are out of mind for her, so storing extra things in a box that she “might” need are forgotten completely. ADHD can show up differently in men vs women and not all ADHD brains work the same, so taking the time to understand not only my child’s needs, but what my clients today with ADHD need to function and what makes sense.  I can’t wait to see where this new career in professional organizing takes me, but I am excited to help others!

As the family and I look into 2026 and reflect on what we have done in 2025 we have talked about many different things.  All of which have brought joy!  I have stepped away from doing as many hands-on jobs with Uncluttered Life LLC and hired Kaycee, which has been such an amazing journey!  We mesh well together and have similar communication styles so our clients are getting the same feel no matter who they are working with.  In doing this - I have been able to make some big moves in the business knowing I have a rockstar by my side during the whole thing!  We have now created 6 different binders to help in all aspects of life from school, to kids, to weddings, to moving and life.  And we don’t plan to stop there.  We plan to expand our online presence and sales and blow these ideas out of the water!

A piece of advice that I have for anyone feeling stuck, or anyone thinking about taking the leap and starting your business is, DO IT! Jump in and start!  You’ll never know what could’ve happened if you wouldn’t have taken that chance or made that move.

The passion was put on your heart for a reason, follow it!
